The marathon is the ultimate endurance test. In 490 BC, Philippides, an Athenian soldier, died of exhaustion after running approximately 40 kilometers from Marathon to Athens. He brought news of the Greek victory over the Persians. A race of about 40 kilometers was included in the first Olympics of the modern era in 1896 in Athens to commemorate this feat. The Olympic distance was officially adopted at the Paris Olympics in 1924.
